A dual-pane file manager for the Mac, made for the keyboard
Two panes, function keys and a shortcut for everything, in the spirit of the classic commanders. Calm and native, as a Mac app should be.
Version 1.0.11 · macOS 14 or later · Free to use · Open source
A working model of Dirnex with example files. Tab switches panes and Shift-Tab leaves the model. The arrows move the cursor, Space marks, Return opens, Backspace goes up, F3 shows a file, F5 copies, F6 moves, F7 makes a folder, F8 deletes and ⌘K finds a command.
This is Dirnex, working. Click it and try the keys.

Everything a commander does, without the clutter
Two panes, one keyboard
Tab switches panes, the arrows move the cursor, Space marks files and Return opens. Every command has a key, and you can change any of them.

Every command, one search away
Press ⌘K and type a few letters. The palette finds any command by name and shows its key, so you learn the keys as you go.

See inside a file without opening it
Quick View shows the file under the cursor in the other pane: code highlighted in about 25 languages, Markdown as a formatted page, and anything Quick Look can show.

Copies wait in line
Copies and moves run one after another in a queue that shows their progress. ⌘Z undoes your file operations.
Servers and clouds are folders
Connect to SFTP, SMB, FTP and Amazon S3 from the sidebar. iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box are there as they are in Finder, and iCloud Photos opens as folders of originals.
Archives and vaults
Open an archive as if it were a folder. Make AES-256 encrypted archives to send, and keep private files in a vault you unlock from the sidebar.
At home on the Mac
Finder tags, Spotlight, Quick Look, APFS clones, AppleScript and Shortcuts work as you expect, and so does the Trash, with Put Back.
In 14 languages
English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, 日本語, 한국어, Nederlands, Polski, Português, Русский, Українська, 简体中文 and 繁體中文.
Open source, so you can check
A file manager sees all your files and asks for Full Disk Access. The code of Dirnex is public under the Apache 2.0 license, so anyone can read what it does with that access.
Read the code on GitHubNo account, no tracking
On its own, Dirnex goes online only to check for updates. A bug report is sent only when you press Send, and a license is checked on your Mac, never on a server.
Free to use. A license if it’s useful.
Every feature works without paying, for as long as you like. After 30 days, Dirnex starts asking for a license now and then. A license for $28 stops the asking and comes with a year of updates.
